Electricity

  • Nevis Island's supply is currently 220V 60Hz.
  • Hill Rise House is basically wired for 220V. That includes all lighting circuits, and most socket outlets which take the British standard 13 amp square pin plugs. Visitors from mainland Europe and other parts of the world where standard current is 220-240V should bring travel adaptors, as if they were travelling to Britain.
  • In the Main House, there are also American style 110V socket outlets (supplied by transformers - maximum 1000 watts each) in the bathrooms and kitchen, and a 100 watt transformer is available for low current 110V use (eg a laptop) if required.
  • In the Guest House, 220V (British) and 110V (American) socket outlets are available in every room.
  • Visitors with 110V equipment are strongly urged not to bring adaptors, which may be incorrectly used in a 220V outlet.

Water

  • Nevis Island water is safe to drink if supplied by the Government Water Department. You do not have to worry about salads and ice prepared with local water. On its own, Government water can taste a little brackish, especially during periods of drought.
  • At Hill Rise House, we can store up to 40,000 gallons of rain water in our cisterns, and this is normally reserved for all domestic use. We use government water for the gardens and the pool.
  • Bottled water is available in the shops, but we prefer to drink our cistern water.
